"No man can be called friendless who has ... the companionship of good books.”"
- Elizabeth Barrett Browning
and a selection of gardening, art and design books, greetings cards. It's very exciting to be invited to take part in this amazing event and we're lookign forward to it!
This year’s exhibition which opens at 11am on Saturday 29th April, contains many rare and important maps of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Radnorshire, together with fine 18th and 19th century views of the significant houses from the counties.
‘Maps and Mansions’ compares work by key map makers across all three counties, and for the first time Aardvark will be showing the Johannes Blaeu maps of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Radnorshire at the same time. There will also be an opportunity to see rare first editions of Hole’s early 17th century maps made to accompany The Poly-Olbion, written by Shakespeare’s friend Michael Drayton. This long topographical poem describes England and Wales, with references to both contemporary science and ancient Arthurian mythology. The exhibition includes two Poly-Olbion maps of Shropshire, together with the map of Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
There are numerous examples of Ogilby maps from the area , (including first editions), a rare first edition Speed of Herefordshire, fine examples of the large Blome maps of Herefordshire and Shropshire, and maps by Janssen, Harrison, Cary and Bowen, (a superb example of the large map of Herefordshire) to name just a few of the mapmakers whose works are included.
People often ask about when colour is added to maps, and the exhibition also includes an early example of the Humphrey Llwyd map of Wales from 1574, a year after its original publication, which has very early – possibly contemporary – colouring.
Amongst the highlights of the exhibition is a folio sized album of prints and sketches put together by nineteenth century Shropshire MP Stanley Leighton, as an aide memoire when he was preparing his magisterial ‘Shropshire Houses’. A number of the houses in the album no longer exist, and it is therefore an outstanding historical record. There are also prints by Buck of Brampton Bryan and Wigmore Castle, together with numerous hand coloured views from ‘Herefordshire Antiquities’ .
The exhibition will be open every day until 14th May. Please contact us if you are interested in receiving a price list.
