Out of the Hills 2019
Out of the Hills debuted last year as a successor to the very popular Shropshire Hills Art Week which ran for five years up until 2017. After a successful beginning last year with excellent sales and good visitor numbers, the curators, artists Kim and Maggie Davis from Lingen in Herefordshire have rung the changes introducing a much wider range of work, and bringing to Aardvark a number of accomplished artists who have not exhibited at the venue before.
This year the exhibition opens on Saturday 1st June: amongst the newcomers are husband and wife Jason and Julienne Braham, who will be showing superb salt-glazed stoneware and celebratory pastoral paintings; Kinki Glass who will be exhibiting a range of dramatic, colourful modern glass, Amanda Hillier whose handmade linocut prints are inspired by nature and landscape, whilst artists Julie Cooper and Anna Cumming work in Mixed media and oils respectively. Finally Nik Burns creates extraordinary burnished animal metal sculptures.
Amongst those returning to show at Aardvark are Kim and Maggie themselves (Kim turns wood and Maggie is a mixed media artist, Ivan Jones who creates animal portraits in pastels and Jane Wells who will be showing her water colours and portraits.
As Aardvark Books owner Sheridan Swinson says: ‘I am astonished by the variety of artists that Kim and Maggie have brought together, and am very excited to welcome new and returning artists. I am particularly interested to see the latest works by Julienne Braham whose recent work has blown me away.’
The exhibition doesn’t have a single theme, but much of the work does show an engagement with the natural world, whether that is in terms of light experiments (Kinki Glass), or visions of the Marches landscape (Amanda Hillier).
All works are for sale and many of the artists also undertake works on commission.
