John Gifford was the name assumed by John Richards Green after he ran through his fortune and had to leave England for awhile. He is described by the DNB as a "vigorous pamphleteer" and wrote many other works including a history of France, a history of the French revolution, a work on Pitt's political life and translated some French anti-revolutionary pamphlets. Erskine, a noted lawyer, sometime attorney-general for the Prince of Wales and later the lord chancellor, had written a pamphlet on the "Causes and Consequences of the War with France" in 1797. It was so popular that it quickly went through some 48 editions. Evans 32191; weakness to front hinge; appears to be signed by Green as John Gifford on rear endpaper
