A day off from the bookery today after a very busy weekend. Saturday was our winter warmer with music from the wonderful Dave Luke and John Hymas. Listening to the World at One my attention started to wonder , and I retuned to Radio 4 Extra, just in time to catch the wonderful clipped tones of the late ian Carmichael playing lord peter Wimsey.

Lou Reed and John Tavener14th November 2013

Last night I put on Palestrina's Mass for Papae Marcelli as a quiet and inadequate token of the loss I feel. Tavener has never been my go to composer - Mozart and Bach vie for that dubious honour - but his works ( particularly the Protecting Veil ) impact on me in a way that only he and Messiaen can do. It is something about the imminence of transcendence - a phrase that I remember reading way back in the days that I read theology on the banks of the Cam.

Phew. A bit of a breather7th November 2013

Wow what an amazing few weeks it has been in the bookery. The weekend after our busiest ever October Brocante/Fleamarket, we spent all of last weekend in Hereford selling cookery books with Paul Hollywood and the Fabulous Baker Brothers. The Baker Brothers were particularly cheery, and didnt' mind having their picture taken with Ethel!
