What an absolutely beautiful day here in Brampton Bryan - unofficial centre of the universe. A perfect early Spring day with bright sunshine and crisp cold weather. Because of the latter the woodburner is still roaring, but I feel some hope that it will not be long before Spring proper arrives and burning wood will be a thing of the past for another six months.

Richard Strauss, Rodrigo on Building a Library, Valentine's Day, Peter Reynolds Musicologist, Art of France18th February 2017

Driving in this morning I was delighted to hear the opening movement of Richard Strauss' Alpine Symphony - a piece that I had not heard for many years. In my youth one of my friends was very keen on Strauss and would play me his music when I visited him. Yet in more recent years the revelations of what a truly unpleasant man Strauss was, has impacted on my wish to hear his music. The same is true of Heidegger's philosophy which at one time I revered.

Valentine's Saturday11th February 2017

It is the Saturday before Valentine's Day and  preparations for the Aardvark event are well underway. Delicious chocolates are being put onto trays by Sarah Rogers, and there is a fantastic display of jewellery from Silverfish for all those who want to make a bigger romantic gesture.

Who would have known it - books are back in fashion4th February 2017

Perhaps I should have guessed when I was asked on to BBC Hereford and Worcester to discuss whether books are in decline and will disappear within our lifetime, but apparently books are now mucho back in fashion, Waterstones are back in profit and  the country is poised for a wave of new independent bookshop openings.
