Back from an unsettle France, to a summer of madcap Aardvark Activity
Back in the UK after a couple of weeks away in my favourite holiday destination La Belle France. As ever many things were perfect, but one could not help but notice that all is not entirely well in the French Universe. Farmer Protests, endless fires - said to be caused by arson, unemployment still stubbornly high, political scandals, newsagents dumping tons of carrots outside government ministries and everywhere a feeling that things were not quite as they should be.
Notwithstanding all of the above we had a fantastic time as the people remain as friendly as ever, the food and culture are near perfect and the landscape of Brittany where we were staying is unlike anywhere else ( particularly on the rocky stretches of coastline). Best of all was the wonderful Festival de Cornaille which was a week long riot of Breton music and culture based around Quimper. Free music performances day and night ( until 2am for those who have trouble sleeping). Best of all were a wonderful Violin/Guitar act called 'Outsider Duo'. Watch them on Youtube or better still catch them live. Also Quimper where we were staying is full of bookshops of all kinds ( new, secondhand and antiquarian). As bookish a town as I have ever visited.
In our abscence much hard work has been going on and I came in this morning to hear the sound of hammering for the 'Crossing the Border Exhibition'. This opens tomorrow at 4pm until 8pm , and I would very much urge you to come and see it as it shaping up to be one of our largest and most impressive exhibitions. The exhibition spills out throughout the warehouse space, and there is therefore the chance to appreciate a real body of work from each of the five participants.
Meanwhile on Sunday the revamped Scarecrow Sunday/ Brampton Bryan Castle event takes place. This is the only day of the year when the castle is open to members of the public, and Edward Harley's tours are always a highlight.
Next week is Brecon Jazz, and the week after the English Civil War Society arrive. Truly summers on the Marches are really special.
