Good news on Aardvark H.Art; new books in stock; October Brocante; Arcadia Music
Just a quick reminder that this year's Aardvark H.Art exhibition doesn't end with the rest of the H.Art programme today, but is on for a whole extra week until next Sunday. Sadly today is the last day to catch the exhibitions at Kingsland and Discoed churches, both of which are well worth seeing. Also brilliant (although not in H.Art proper) is the Redlake Artists show at Chapel Lawn. A biannual event, this year's show is full of clever, bright and thought-provoking art.
Yesterday I managed to list over 100 titles and get them into the shop and on the shelves. Some very interesting books in the areas of archaeology, architecture, military and literature. We are building up our stocks for the autumn and have the usual cornucopia of books due next month. In the meantime I am still trying to clear some of the books I have bought earlier in the year. Put on some extremely attractive and interesting Folio titles yesterday, including their two volume illustrated history of Japan, and the five volume Folio Society history of the Renaissance. We have had a very good selection of Folio titles this year, but as they sell so quickly it is always hard to keep our stocks where I would like.
Two dates for the diary are the Arcadia at Aardvark panel discussion at 3pm on the 1st of October and the October Brocante/Flea Market, 10am-3pm on the 9th of October. Have lots of bookings for stalls for the latter already, but we still have space if you would like to sell your excess treasure. Stall spaces are only £9.00, with an extra £3 charge if you need a table.
The Arcadia event will feature Eleanor Alberga and Adam Gorb (the Festival's two composers in residence) talking about their work and influences and also discussing the themes of 'home' and 'exile' which resonate in this year's musical selection for the festival. Eleanor Alberga will be familiar to many locally (and internationally since she was asked to provide the piece that opened the 2015 'Last Night of the Proms'). Adam Gorb may be less well-known, but his CV (Head of the School of Composition in 2000 at the Royal Northern College of Music, Fellow of the RNCM, winner of three British Composer Awards etc), shows how eminent and respected he is. We should certainly be in for a treat, and tickets are £4 on the door.
