Frieda Hughes event, small house clearance, Aardvark Sale and Car Boot
As you maybe aware we are hosting an event with Frieda Hughes on the 21st of June (6pm-7.30pm ) in which she will be reading from and talking about her new book George - a memoir of the time she spent with a magpie which found its way to her house and garden after she moved to her home in the Marches. It is a criticism often levelled at us that we don't do enough book events, and I suppose this goes back to a subconscious feeling I have that I try as much as possible not to impose my literary tastes on those who visit the shop. I guess I hope that everybody who comes will find their own path through our shelves and find some great treasure without my having directed them to it.
In the case of 'George' the new 'Magpie Memoir' by Frieda Hughes I am happy to break my rule as the book is a delight and I think that both the author and the publisher (Profile) are to be congratulated on producing a small book that so perfectly explores a number of big and timely ideas. Free tickets for the reading are still available. Call us or email to our usual address (or use the contact service on our website).
Yesterday was quiet and I therefore had a good run at putting on some of the books I acquired from a recent book buy in Oxford. The books are mostly on travel and history, but also contain some really interesting and unusual fiction. Our 'new in' table is somewhat groaning so you can get into Lucy's good books by coming in and reducing the pile she has to shelve.
We also have some places left at the July 2nd car boot which this year also marks the start of our biggest ever annual sale. The time has come, the Aardvark said, to start to clear some of the immense backlog of books in the warehouse. There will be terrific book bargains in the sale and if you come on the first day you can enjoy wonderful car boot bargains and also get an additional 10% discount on everything in the shop (including cards). Make a date in your diary.
