Spring Fair, Epic victory in Kingsland Quiz, 'The Bookshop' performance at Courtyard, Valentine's Event
Riding on the coat tails of our brilliant and extremely knowledgable neighbours the Aardvark Allstars team managed to emerge victorious at the Kingsland Teddy Trust quiz, beating some 18 other teams to the coverted first prize. Never has a victory been less deserved as the Ivy House contingent were simply awesome. My main contribution was finally remembering what goes into a bearnaise sauce ( yes it is Tarragon, but for some reason I just couldn't fix on the right herb and opted for Tarragon as being the only one that I couldn't reject out of hand). A great evening and lots of money raised for the Teddy Trust that is a great cause which Aardvark has been supporting for the last couple of years.
Speaking of charity thank you to all the Aardvark customers in December who put money into the Shelter boxes on the Café tables. Considering the bad weather we experienced it amounted to a good total which we have now sent to the charity.
Thursday we spent all day at the Spring Fair looking at cards and other gift items. We have located a couple of new card suppliers - including one in Shropshire and another in Herefordshire - and put orders through with a number of our existing companies. We were lucky to meet up again with Simon Drew himself and he took us through their new list of cards, aprons and tea-towels. Simon is a delight to talk to and he was full of amusing anecdotes about the people who he has worked with over the years. He also continues to produce all his cards in the UK and to take great care over all his products. A true gentleman and a gentle comic genius.
If you are still wanting to see the new film 'The Bookshop' at its special preview at the Courtyard Theatre on Tuesday 6th March at 7.30pm you will need to hurry as tickets have almost sold out. This film is based on a wickedly funny comic novel by Penelope Fitzgerald ( why not read the book before you come).
Finally next Saturday is our first event of the year - our 'Valentine's Event' - with a return for the ever wonderful Trevor Davies Trio, a special booksigning of the paperback edition of 'False Lights' , children's crafts and chocolates by Sarah Rogers. Far be it for us to make the suggestion but why not defer your Valentine's celebration to next Saturday ( avoid the rain and sleet today) and come and have a wonderful time at Aardvark.
